These Terms of Service and End-User Licence Agreement (the Terms) form a contract between you and Student Compass V.O.F., Grote Gracht 60 E 01, 6211 SX Maastricht, The Netherlands, KvK number 42011388, VAT number NL869278071B01 (Student Compass, we, us or our).
They apply to the Student Compass mobile app, related websites and associated services (together, the Service). By creating an account, downloading, installing or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
These Terms should be read with our Privacy Policy and, where applicable, the terms shown in the Apple App Store or Google Play purchase flow. The Privacy Policy explains our processing of personal data, including the third-party infrastructure and AI services used to run the Service.
You must be at least 16 years old to create or use an account. Do not use the Service if you are under 16.
If you are 16 or 17, we use your date of birth to apply the under-18 safeguards described in the Privacy Policy. Before a purchase, you must complete the guardian-authorisation confirmation required in the purchase flow, confirming that your parent or legal guardian has reviewed and authorised the relevant agreement/use where applicable. We may ask for a reasonable confirmation of that authority. A parent or guardian may contact us at contact@studentcompass.nl about the account.
You must not use the Service if applicable law, a valid suspension or these Terms prohibit you from doing so.
Student Compass is a student orientation and community service. At launch, the Service may include a Maastricht business directory and map; connections; activities and multi-stop plans; private and group messaging; check-ins and an opt-in rewards programme; user reviews, postcards, place notes and writeups; Pulse Check; friendship-map, met-confirmation and streak features; Scout AI; and Student Compass One paid features.
The Service may change as we develop it. Student Compass is not:
Business and place information, including hours, prices, ratings, facilities, dietary tags and location information, may change or be inaccurate. Verify information directly with the relevant organisation before relying on it. We do not guarantee a business's identity, availability, safety, legality, quality, price, terms or performance.
Student Compass does not operate business accounts, sell tickets, arrange paid activities, collect marketplace commissions, or hold rent, deposits, ticket money or other marketplace funds. Your dealings with a business or another user are at your own discretion and are between you and that person or organisation.
You must provide accurate account information, keep it up to date, and keep account credentials confidential. Tell us promptly at contact@studentcompass.nl if you suspect unauthorised access. You may not share, sell or transfer your account.
Subject to these Terms, we grant you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable and revocable licence to download, install and use the app on devices you own or control, and to use the Service for your lawful, personal and non-commercial use.
You must not:
Never send your BSN, DigiD credentials, passport/identity-document details, bank information or payment-card details to another user or unverified third party. Be especially cautious of any request for money in connection with housing or an activity.
Connections are mutual: one user sends a request and the other accepts or declines. Private direct messaging is available only between connected users. Activities may be public/discoverable or limited by their relevant settings; creating a public discoverable activity requires an active premium entitlement.
An activity has a group thread. Group threads may continue after the activity ends, and members may rename a persistent thread or invite their own connections where the Service permits it. Treat messages, group threads, public activity information, postcards, reviews, place notes and writeups responsibly: another recipient may copy or share what you provide.
A public activity can have an expiring shareable link. Signed-out visitors may see the activity title, venue, date, available places and the first names/avatars of up to three attendees. Users who opt out are not shown, and under-18 users are never shown. Do not create a public activity or share a link if that would disclose information you are not entitled to share.
Check-ins require the controls shown in the Service, including venue QR scanning where applicable and location verification at the time of the check-in. Do not circumvent or manipulate check-in controls. We may reject a check-in based on technical/safety controls, including distance, GPS accuracy, cooldowns, daily limits or implausible travel signals.
The rewards programme is optional. Its eligibility, points, limits, participating venues and any redemption conditions are governed by the reward terms presented when you opt in. Points have no cash value, are personal to you, cannot be sold or transferred and may be corrected, withheld or removed for error, fraud, abuse, breach of these Terms or a change required by law. We will give reasonable notice before a material adverse change to an active rewards programme where appropriate.
Met confirmations, friendship-map records, pair/group streaks and group availability are social features, not evidence of identity, friendship, attendance, safety or consent. Do not rely on them as such. Blocking, account deletion, expiry and relevant user settings can affect what is visible or retained.
You retain ownership of content you submit to the Service, including your profile information, messages, photos, voice notes, postcards, reviews, place notes, writeups and activity content (User Content).
You grant Student Compass a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, store, reproduce, format, technically adapt, display and communicate your User Content only as necessary to provide, secure, moderate, maintain and improve the Service, including making it visible to users you choose or the relevant feature/settings make it visible to. This licence ends when you delete the User Content or your account, except where retention is required by law, necessary to resolve a report/dispute, or another user has independently copied or shared the content.
You confirm that you have the rights and permissions needed to submit User Content. You must not submit highly sensitive information through Scout, messages, voice notes, reviews or free-text fields. In particular, do not submit BSN, passport/ID numbers, bank/payment details, health records, immigration-file documents or other unnecessary sensitive information.
Photo attachments may be held in a pending moderation state. We may delay, remove, restrict or preserve User Content where reasonably necessary to enforce these Terms, protect people, investigate reports, comply with law or operate the Service.
We do not sell your User Content or use it to train general-purpose AI models. Our processing of User Content, including the use of service providers, is described in the Privacy Policy.
Scout is AI, not a human adviser. It can be inaccurate, incomplete, outdated or unsuitable, even if its answer sounds confident. It does not know your complete circumstances and does not access official government, university, banking or immigration systems. Do not rely on Scout for legal, immigration, financial, health, safety or other significant decisions without checking a reliable source or qualified professional.
Scout does not make decisions about your eligibility, access, rights or opportunities. Do not use it to generate unlawful, harmful, discriminatory, harassing, defamatory or infringing content; bypass safeguards; obtain system prompts; reverse engineer an underlying model; make automated/bulk requests; or build a competing AI service.
When you use Scout, voice-note transcription or optional budget tips, your inputs may be processed by the service providers described in the Privacy Policy, including the paid Google Gemini service. Voice notes may be transcribed so that they can be handled as text for safety processes. Do not submit sensitive or unnecessary personal information to Scout. The Service will repeat this warning in the Scout interface. You may use Scout output for your personal use, but we do not promise it is accurate, complete, original, non-infringing or fit for a particular purpose.
At launch, content moderation is handled through human admin review of user reports and content held for review. We do not rely on automated text screening as a launch safeguard. We do not currently operate automated image classification or CSAM-detection. Human reviewers make content and account restriction decisions and, where we restrict content or an account, we provide the required statement of reasons and redress information.
Student Compass does not conduct identity verification, background checks or suitability checks on every user, business or other third party. A profile, listing, review, check-in, connection, met-confirmation or partner/landmark tag is not an endorsement, guarantee or verification by us.
Use sensible safety precautions when meeting someone: meet first in public, tell a trusted person where you are going, and do not send money or sensitive identity/banking information in advance.
You can block users and report content/accounts through the available Service tools. You may also submit a notice in English or Dutch to contact@studentcompass.nl. A helpful notice identifies the relevant content/account, where it appears, why you believe it is unlawful or breaches these Terms, and a way to contact you.
We review manual reports and eligible automated flags. If we restrict content or an account, we will provide the affected user with a statement of reasons and information about available redress where required by law. You may appeal a content or account decision by emailing contact@studentcompass.nl within six months; a different human reviewer will reassess it where practicable. We may restrict reporting functionality or accounts that repeatedly submit manifestly unfounded notices or repeatedly post manifestly illegal content, after a prior warning where required by law.
Parts of the Service are free. Student Compass One is the paid tier and may include enhanced or unlimited access to selected features, including Scout. The exact entitlement, price, currency, taxes and renewal terms shown in the Apple App Store or Google Play purchase flow apply.
At launch, Student Compass One may be offered as a monthly auto-renewing subscription, yearly auto-renewing subscription and one-time lifetime purchase. Unless the storefront displays otherwise, intended launch prices are €4.99 per month, €29.99 per year and €34.99 lifetime, inclusive of VAT where legally required.
All purchases are processed by Apple's In-App Purchase system or Google Play Billing. Their payment, renewal, cancellation and refund processes apply. We do not receive your card or payment-account details. Monthly and yearly subscriptions renew automatically unless you cancel through the relevant storefront before its stated deadline. Cancelling prevents the next renewal and normally leaves access available until the paid period ends.
"Lifetime" means the period for which we make Student Compass One available; it is not a promise to operate the app or any particular feature forever. This does not limit mandatory consumer rights if we fail to provide the digital service in conformity with these Terms.
If you are an EU/EEA consumer, you may generally have a 14-day right to withdraw from a distance contract. For digital content or a digital service supplied immediately, that right may be lost only where the legal conditions are met, including your express request for immediate supply and acknowledgement of the resulting loss of the withdrawal right where applicable. Where we rely on that exception, we will present the required request and acknowledgement clearly and keep an appropriate record.
For ordinary cancellation and refund requests, use the relevant app-store process first. This does not remove your mandatory rights against us. Contact contact@studentcompass.nl if the Service is not supplied in conformity with these Terms or you believe you have a statutory remedy.
We will provide the Service with reasonable care and skill and in accordance with applicable mandatory law, including Dutch rules implementing Directive (EU) 2019/770 on digital content and digital services. We will provide updates, including security updates, for the period you can reasonably expect in light of the Service's type, purpose and circumstances.
The Privacy Policy is the complete notice for personal-data processing. It identifies, among other things, the current backend, subscription, notification, map and AI/moderation services. The provider inventory is still subject to final technical verification; we may replace, add or remove infrastructure providers as the Service evolves. If a change materially affects how we process your personal data, we will update the Privacy Policy and give notice where law requires it.
The Service can link to or display third-party businesses, places, websites and app-store services. Their terms, privacy notices and policies govern their own services. We are not responsible for third-party content, sites, products or services.
The Service, app, software, design, name, logos, content and associated intellectual-property rights are owned by Student Compass or its licensors. Except for the limited licence in section 3, no rights are granted to you. You may not use Student Compass trademarks without prior written permission.
The Service depends on internet connections, user devices and third-party platforms. Subject to mandatory law, we do not guarantee uninterrupted, error-free, secure or always available access, or that all Service, user or third-party information is accurate, complete or current.
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot legally be excluded or limited, including liability for fraud, intentional misconduct, or death/personal injury where applicable, or your mandatory consumer rights.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, loss of profits, loss of opportunity, reputational harm, decisions made in reliance on Service/Scout information, or the acts, omissions or content of users and third parties. Where the law permits a limit, our total aggregate liability arising out of or connected with the Service in any 12-month period is limited to the greater of: (a) the amount you paid us for the Service in that period; and (b) €350. If you are a consumer, this applies only to the extent mandatory consumer law permits.
You may stop using the Service at any time and delete your account in the app or at https://student-compass-app.github.io/delete-account.html. Account deletion and retention are described in the Privacy Policy.
We may restrict, suspend or terminate access if you materially breach these Terms, we are required by law to do so, or use of the Service creates a real risk of harm to users, third parties or the Service. Except in urgent, serious or legally restricted cases, we will give notice and an opportunity to address the issue first.
If we terminate paid access without cause, we will provide any remedy required by law, including a proportionate refund where appropriate.
We may update these Terms or change the Service for legal, security, technical, operational or product-development reasons. For a material change that disadvantages you, we will give reasonable advance notice in the Service or by email. If mandatory law requires it, we will give you a free right to terminate before the change takes effect and provide any required refund or other remedy. Continued use after the effective date means you accept the update, except where law requires a different acceptance process.
These Terms are governed by Dutch law. If you are a consumer habitually resident in another EU/EEA country, you retain the protection of mandatory provisions of your country of residence.
The competent courts in the Netherlands have jurisdiction, without limiting a consumer's mandatory right to bring proceedings in their country of residence or to be sued only there where applicable law so provides.
For complaints, email contact@studentcompass.nl. We aim to acknowledge a complaint within five working days and provide a substantive response within 14 days. We are not obliged to use, and have not committed to using, a consumer alternative-dispute-resolution body or Dutch geschillencommissie. The EU Online Dispute Resolution platform was discontinued on 20 July 2025 and no ODR link is provided.
If you download the app from Apple's App Store, these Terms are between you and Student Compass, not Apple. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support. To the extent required by law, you may notify Apple if the app fails to conform to an applicable warranty, and Apple may refund the purchase price paid for the app. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of the relevant provisions and may enforce them.
If you download the app through Google Play, Google Play's applicable terms also govern your use of Google Play and its billing service.
If a provision is invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in force. We may replace the invalid provision with a valid provision that most closely reflects its intended legal and commercial effect where permitted. A failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. You may not transfer these Terms or your account without our written consent. We may transfer these Terms in connection with a restructuring, business transfer or conversion of the V.O.F. into a B.V., provided that this does not reduce your mandatory rights.
These Terms, the Privacy Policy and any clear tier-specific terms presented at purchase form the entire agreement between you and us about the Service. The Service is offered in English for an international-student audience; this does not reduce mandatory rights that apply to you.
